The economical and state-of-the-art method of road maintenance

The Road Repair Patcher by Schmidt deals with repair works easily and reliably

Our roads are being neglected. This becomes evident every spring anew when the time-consuming repair works of numerous potholes and cracks in the asphalt cause speed limitations or road closures. And it is not getting better. After all, we have long since had technically advanced solutions at our disposal, which prevent small cracks and potholes from turning into permanent defects. The Road Repair Patcher by Schmidt is the economical and state-of-the-art answer to these challenges, which are part of the road maintenance.

Four men against one crack

The conventional repair of municipal and state roads as well as motorways - even if it is just a matter of potholes or cracks - is time, materials and thus cost-intensive. The points which are finally summed up in the economy calculation range from the setup of a building site and its securing through the possibly required route diversion or traffic guidance up to the provision of machines and the four or five man deployed. The costs of the conventional method - depending on the basis of the calculation - amount to 336 to 370 euros per working hour. This work can be done in a more economical way.

Saving potential

Together with an auditor, various scenarios have been calculated in the company Schmidt. In the end, the cost saving per working hour is 25 to 32 percent. It is a comprehensive calculation that yields this result. It is clear and transparent, since all costs - from the investment in the various vehicles and devices up to the labour costs, the share in the administrative costs as well as the depreciation allowances - are taken into account.

Building site safeguard included

The advantage of the Schmidt Road Repair Patcher compared to a gang of workers is its mode of operation: one man is sufficient to eliminate defects in the road surface. The Patcher is its own building site safeguard; the repaired area is immediately fit for traffic again and repair by machines is on average more durable than repair by hand. Instead of a gang of workers and expensive logistics, merely the Patcher, a trained operator and the filling material are required. The time a gang of workers need to set up the building site, repair the defect and disassemble the building site is sufficient for the Patcher to render the repair work several times.

Individual damage control

In order to ensure the optimum elimination of defects, the operator is able to specifically adjust the Patcher to the respective pothole depth, the asphalt condition and the exposure of the road structure. Hence, the repair is geared to the damage symptom and not determined by the random principle. Furthermore, the strong compression of the filling material and optimum edging are guaranteed by working with high pressure.

Definitely more safety

All work processes are controlled by the operator from the driver’s cab. He is thus able to keep a close eye on all processes and is never exposed to the traffic. He is also protected from fumes, emissions or dust as well as weather influences. He has a perfect overview of his tool and the damaged area at all times. The quality of the repaired area also contributes to safety: long-term tests have shown extremely high durability due to the excessive compression and the even finish on the one hand as well as the excellent grip on the other. Especially cyclists are exposed to high risk on patched roads, because the surface is extremely fragmented and does not provide the desired grip in wet conditions.

Coordinated way of working

Normally, the Patcher approaches the damaged area to be repaired and places the boom into working position. Then the crack or pothole is cleaned with compressed air. The operator subsequently applies a thin bitumen layer to the damaged area. This is followed by a mixture of aggregate and bitumen emulsion, which is excessively compressed. Finally, the repaired area is covered with a thin layer of pure aggregate. The entire procedure takes no more than a few minutes. The area can immediately be released for the traffic again and the Patcher can set out for its next job.  Since the Patcher not only carries all necessary materials with it but also keeps them at processing temperature, there are no waiting times. The Patcher is immediately ready for operation. This also speaks in favour of its high economic efficiency.
